Our obsession with penguins continues. Today we read some poems out of the book "Arctic Antics". My friends had fun listening to the poem "Between My Daddy's Feet" as it tied in nicely with our penguin daddy races (more on this later in the post). They also enjoyed solving the predator riddles. They learned that killer whales and leopard seals love to hunt penguins!
Wednesday, January 18th: Our obsession with penguins continues. My friends put on their "scientist hats" today and did some experiments involving penguins. In our first experiment we had to colour a picture of a penguin with crayons. After we coloured the picture we sprayed it with coloured water. We discovered that the water did not penetrate the page where we coloured. Just like our crayons, penguin feathers are coated in a waxy substance that helps them stay dry! For our next experiment we had to pretend we were daddy emperor penguins. Our challenge was to walk around with our "egg" between our feet. Of course we made it even more fun and had races! It is much harder than it looks. We have a new appreciation for the penguin daddies! Some of my friends started researching "Gentoo" penguins. They are the next type of penguin we are going to study. Mrs. Meredith made notes on the board and then video taped my friends. She is going to play their video for the rest of the class tomorrow so they can share their research and teach their friends about gentoo penguins! After quiet time we did some DPA to penguin songs! 5 Little Penguins Slipping on the Ice and the Penguin song. Click on the link below and have your child sing it for you! :) Those were not our only songs! Mrs. Meredith taught us the song "40 Years on an Iceberg". Here we are sitting around the carpet singing it and doing the actions! Have a wonderful evening! :)
