Wednesday, April 26th: We had a busy day today! This afternoon we had some excitement! One of our friends lost a tooth. In honor of his losing his tooth, we read the book "The Night Before the Tooth Fairy'. He got to go to the office and get one of the tooth necklaces! Fun! After the Tooth Fairy story, we read the book "Les graines", seeds in French. On Friday, we are going to plant some seeds - we have dill, carrots and morning glory seeds to plant. Our interest in spring continues. My friends are still very interested in worms. This morning they talked about "les verres de terre" (earthworms in French). They were playing school and doing some writing on the board! Awesome. We had some fun activities this afternoon. At the water table, we had lily pads and some frogs and turtles. My friends were having a great time playing in our "pond". Some of my friends were having fun with spring patterns. We had worms, butterflies, flowers and we had to extend the pattern! Other friends were conducting a colour experiment with Mrs. Meredith. They had to colour a circle in a coffee filter and then placed it in water. The filter was not submerged - just the tip was touching. It was very cool the water broke down the colours so when they did green (blue and yellow came out). They are going to let the coffee filters dry and turn them into butterflies! Other friends were having fun doing self-portraits at the art centre. We put out paper and mirrors! Awesome artists. Other friends were having fun playing school and building on the carpet. They never get tired of either of those activities. I think they just like to sit in the teacher chair. Have a wonderful evening! :)
Monday, April 24th: * Permission Form * Please check your child's mailbag for an important permission form. On Monday, May 1st the entire school will be travelling to St. Patrick's Church to celebrate Easter/Education Week Mass. Please complete the form and return it in your child's mail bag as soon as possible. We had a very busy day today! This morning, my "hockey fanatic" friends were anxious to update our pool! Needless to say, they are all very excited that Ottawa is moving on to round two! My friends are invited to wear their hockey jerseys, t-shirts, or hockey colours on Thursday to support their favorite team! The best part about our hockey pool is the math! They don't even know they are doing it - we now know how to read charts, statistics, we can figure out how many more, and addition! Love it! This afternoon we celebrated "Earth Day". We know that Earth Day was actually on Saturday but we were so busy on Friday with the Spring Raffle and the Eco Parade that we did not have a chance to celebrate. We read "The Earth Book" by Todd Parr and then we made "Earth Day" bookmarks! Mrs. Helgason is going to laminate them for us so we can use them at home! We used our sensory bins today to explore measurement! At the water table, my friends were estimating how many "scoops" it would take to fill their container. They used a variety of measuring spoons - which took more? Which took less? Some great estimating going on! Other friends were having fun using the kinetic sand to measure! Which container held more - is there more if you keep the sand loose or pack it? Other friends had fun with the building provocation. I set out some materials and asked the question: "What can you build?" Here are some of their creations! Other friends were using the iPads to explore math! One friend was playing a game where she had to order the numbers. Her character had to cross water and get through a maze of lava! Awesome she was ordering the numbers 55-70! Great work! Have a wonderful evening! :)
Friday, April 21st: We have had a very busy day! Mrs. Meredith was away so our routine was a little off. Thanks to Mrs. "A" for being such a great substitute! We had a lot to celebrate today! One of my friends is celebrating her 6th birthday tomorrow so she made her birthday crown today! We also participated in the "Eco Parade" and had a bunch of winners in the "Spring Raffle" - more on that later in the post! My friends are very interested in "spring" and all of the changes it brings, so today, we read the book "The Diary of a Worm". It has been raining so much lately that it seemed appropriate we learned about worms because we are finding them all over! After our story we got to work on some fun activities. Of course our math activity involved worms! We did worm measurement - we had to estimate first and then measure the worm to find out if our guesses were correct! Here are some photos of my friends measuring worms! As you know, tomorrow is Earth Day! Some of my friends were busy at the art table using earth colours in some coffee filter art! They coloured their coffee filter, then we sprayed them with water so the colour would run and then hung them in the hall! Sorry, I only got the beginning photos and didn't get any of the finished products. :( My friends are loving our "airport". They have made control panels for the plane and pilot, love passing thru security and enjoy interacting with the ticket agent! Here are some cute photos of our world travellers! Other friends were having fun working at the counter. They were using our "leaves" on the mirrors to create patterns and pictures! Awesome and creative work. Other friends found a renewed interest in the word match sensory bin. They found some of our plastic Easter eggs and started experimenting. They discovered that if they put different objects inside the eggs and shook them, they created different sounds! Awesome scientists! After experimenting with the beans they then started a hunt in the classroom for other small objects that would fit inside the eggs. They used some gems and some of our plastic bear counters. Amazing. Mrs. H did you know that the bears and beans in the egg make more noise than just the beans? This afternoon after the Eco parade some of my friends were making tulips at the art table! I love tulips - a sure sign of spring! One of my friends made her own book! She illustrated it and wrote about going to the raffle! The best part was she did it all on her own - she sounded out the words - awesome writer! We are ending on a high note. As I mentioned earlier in the post, we had a few winners in the "Spring Raffle". These lucky ladies brought their prizes home to enjoy! Have a wonderful weekend! :)
Wednesday, April 19th: * Reminder * Please ensure that your child's lunches and snacks are nut free. We are a nut free school and an Easter treat in our lunches is nice but only if they don't contain nuts! Thank you! * Spring Raffle * Just a reminder that our Spring Raffle is on Friday. Please complete the tickets, cut them out and return with payment. It is very difficult to complete and cut out tickets on behalf of 27 children. Mrs. Meredith and I thank you in advance for your help. * Eco Parade * We are celebrating Earth Day on Friday, April 21st. If possible, please dress your child in blue or earth colours (brown, green, moss green, mustard yellow). The kindergarten students will participate in the parade around the school yard. Kinder's theme is "Reduce, Reuse and Recycle". We will be marching as the "Blue Box" (we will tape recyclable things to our blue clothes). * Request * If any of you have any old collections of buttons, wine bottle corks or other small interesting objects please send them in. We are always looking for fun things to count or use in math activities. Thank you. Wow! The beginning of this post was announcement heavy - sorry about that. I guess that is what happens when I have been out of the room for a week - with the way the holiday fell I have been with the other class. We had a fun day today! One of my JK friends was celebrating her birthday. We have a new thing at St. Anne, video announcements that we watch on the Smartboard. She got to see her picture and the reporters wished her a happy birthday! My hockey fanatic friends were anxious to update our chart. They had fun looking up their players names and finding their stats. We learned how to read some great charts on the NHL website (like the number of games played, goals, assists, total points). Here are some great shots of them updating our chart and filling out their player stats! This afternoon we had a discussion about "spring". I asked my friends the question: "What do you think of when I say spring?" Needless to say, I got a variety of answers. We narrowed down our choices and decided that in the coming weeks we want to learn about: planting seeds and flowers, rain (why does it rain? where does rain come from?), and worms. Our discussion of spring led us to talking about "baby animals". That conversation led specifically to "chicks". My friends were so excited to learn that our grade 1 friends got some eggs. We went to visit the eggs today and noticed that they are in an incubator. All of my friends commented that they need to be in the incubator to keep them warm so the chick can develop - just like the daddy emperor penguin kept his egg warm between his feet. When we got back to classroom some of my SK friends drew in their journals about the eggs - each week we are going to visit the eggs and note the changes. We learned that it takes 21 days for the eggs to hatch. We can't wait to see what happens. Here is a great photo of some of my friends checking out the eggs! All of my friends got to visit and look at the eggs but I kept forgetting the camera so I only got a picture of a few. My friends were having a great time with activities this afternoon. At the art table they were making flowers, some were writing and drawing about the eggs, some were making numbers in salt, and some were doing a sight-word match in the sensory bin! Here are some great photos! I have one friend who loves all things "Lego". He blows me away with his creations - today, he showed me a dinosaur that he made with Lego! Wow! Have a wonderful evening! Go Sens Go!!!!
Thursday, April 13th:
Mrs. Meredith and I would like to wish all of you a very Happy Easter!! Enjoy your families and the beautiful weather! God bless! Wednesday, April 12th: * Spring Raffle * You will find a note in your child's mailbag about our Spring Raffle. Please complete the tickets, cut them out and place them in your child's mailbag with payment. Thank you! Thank you all for your patience with no post on Monday. I am getting a new laptop and the prep (saving and transferring files) overloaded my Google Drive on Monday! Thankfully, I have managed to get some of it organized so I was able to upload and use today's pictures! I have a room full of hockey fans!! To make the playoffs exciting, some of my friends decided we should have a hockey pool! To get us in the mood we read the book "Let's Play a Hockey Game". My friends loved it - it was a rhyming book and they guessed all of the hockey rhymes! Hockey was not our only excitement today! One of our friends celebrated his birthday! Happy birthday :) After our story, my friends spent some time helping Mrs. Meredith convert our dramatic play area into an airport! It looks amazing so far! We have a plane, check-in counter, a security area (we have to pass through a metal detector), a waiting area, and of course baggage claim! It is not open yet we are hoping to open it tomorrow or Tuesday! Stay tuned to see our travellers! Getting back to our hockey fanatics! After our story my friends coloured the logos of all of the teams in the playoffs! We then made our picks! Not all of my friends chose to participate but those that did are very excited! In keeping with our hockey excitement my friends wanted to watch some hockey at lunch! We watched the movie "The Magic Hockey Skates" while we ate! So much fun! My friends were so creative today! They were building like crazy! Some were using Lego and others were using the wooden blocks! It is amazing what they can create - so imaginative! Just for fun! One of my friends had Star Wars cookies for snack! Before he ate them he sorted them! Good guys vs. bad guys! Have a wonderful evening! Go Sens Go!!!
Monday, April 10th:
Just a quick note to let you know that I am having some issues with my computer. Unfortunately, this means that I am unable to properly do a blog post today. Hopefully the issue will be resolved by Friday. Sorry! Friday, April 7th: I am so sorry there was no post on Wednesday - I didn't realize until I got home that I had forgotten my laptop at school. So, this post will cover some of the activities we did on Wednesday as well as what we did today! We started our day discussing Easter. We got a new cross for our religion table and we talked about why during Lent the cross is covered with burlap. I read them the story "The Tale of Three Trees". It is a very moving Easter story and describes how each tree inadvertently serves Jesus. The first tree becomes his cradle (it was a trough to feed animals), the second tree becomes a fishing boat (carrying Jesus and His disciples through a storm) and the third tree becomes His cross. After our discussion, we went to activities. This morning was a little different as Mrs. Logan and her class joined us for the morning. The children had fun doing all of our Easter activities. At the art table we made an Easter picture, we built ramps to race Easter eggs, some of my friends played Lego "Tic Tac Toe" and others had fun decorating Easter eggs and going on an egg hunt on the Smartboard! Here are some great shots from Wednesday! My friends were doing an Easter egg hunt on the Smartboard, they built a zoo in dramatic play, built some amazing block structures and then played in the water table! Have a wonderful weekend! :)
