HAPPY HALLOWEEN!
Friday, October 31st: HAPPY HALLOWEEN! We have been in the "Halloween Spirit" for the last couple of days. We have continued our inquiry into bats and we also made "goop". We have loved singing the song "Five Little Pumpkins" and today we had a costume parade around the school. Here are some great pictures of the action the last couple of days: We all had a great time playing in the "goop"! We described it using our senses and then some of us wrote poems about "goop"! We had a great time ~ the messier the better! The children loved wearing their costumes! The costume parade was a great success!! We popped in on a few classrooms and showed off our stuff!! Happy Halloween! Have fun "Trick or treating" and be safe! :)

Wednesday, October 29th: Please check your child's mailbag for your interview time on Thursday, November 6th. If you have more than one child in the school the interviews were scheduled as close together as possible. The "Progress Reports" for grades 1-6 go home tomorrow and will contain interview times. We have had a very busy couple of days. This morning we stayed outside to work on some gross motor skills. When we came inside we continued with our patterning in math and created a pattern by clapping. One of our friends celebrated a birthday today! He's five years old ~ we sang "Happy Birthday" in English and in French. Here are some great photos of some of our work over the last couple of days: Have a wonderful evening.
Monday, October 27th: Thank you all for your patience with minimal postings last week. As you know, the events of last Wednesday were a difficult and trying time for not only our city but our country. The victims and their families remain in our thoughts and prayers. We enjoyed our field trip to Saunders Farm on Friday and I would like to take this opportunity to thank all of our parent volunteers. Without your help this field trip would not have been possible. Thanks to all of you who shared your photos of that fun day. Today we continued our inquiry about bats. We read the book "Bat Loves the Night". We learned how bats use their ears to help them see at night. It is called echolocation! We also spent some time playing in our haunted house. These two "witches" brewed up a potion and now they have extra eyeballs! Wow! Many of our friends were using the straws to make different structures. This friend got creative and used them to make a fishing rod ~ another friend even gave us the "fish" to put on the line! Have a wonderful evening!
Monday, October 20th: We have had a very busy day today! Due to the holiday last Monday, we did not have library today but will go next Monday instead. The children are very excited about our upcoming trip to Saunders Farm. We hope the weather cooperates!! We have started a new "mini-inquiry" about bats! We brainstormed ideas about what we already knew about bats and read the book "Bats" today. It is an informational text about bats but is illustrated like a picture book. We learned a new word "nocturnal". Ask us what it means!! In keeping with our new inquiry, we did a lot of "batty" activities today. We did some bat math and started an art project making bats. We continued to decorate our haunted house. It is coming along nicely! Mrs. H made some coloured rice for our cauldron and we are making it into a "witchy" brew! Here are some great photos of our day! Our "batty" activities weren't the only action today. Some of our friends were working on their writing and proper letter formation. They traced the cards with their fingers and then created their letters. Great work! Have a wonderful evening!
Wednesday, October 15th: A reminder that tomorrow Thursday, October 16th is PICTURE DAY! The background for the pictures this year is green; as a result, please ensure that your child does not wear green as the picture won't turn out. We had a very busy morning. We are conducting a "mini-inquiry" into leaves. We read the book "Why Do Leaves Change Colour?" We discovered that in the fall, the leaves are no longer producing chlorophyll and as a result they start to lose their green colour. We not only asked why do leaves change colour we also wondered why they had lines in them? We discovered that the lines are actually veins and that these veins carry food to different parts of the tree. We worked on labelling a sheet with the different parts of a leaf and we also examined some leaves with magnifying glasses. We are really becoming great scientists!! Leaves were not our only scientific exploration today! Mrs. Cowan, our principal, brought in some porcupine quills that were stuck in a branch. Mrs. Dilabio, our vice principal visited our classroom and worked with us while we examined the quills! We had a lot of fun!! Finally, we did some art. As you know we are making our dramatic play area into a haunted house. Today the children painted some cardboard boxes that will become our windows and shutters! They had a great time! Have a wonderful evening and don't forget tomorrow is picture day! :)
Tuesday, October 14th: Welcome back! I hope everyone had a wonderful Thanksgiving and enjoyed the extra couple of days off!! I don't usually post on Tuesday; however, Friday and Monday were holidays so I decided to do a quick post! PICTURE DAY: Thursday, October 16th We had a very busy day learning about the letter "A" and making alligator art! We have decorated our classroom for Halloween and are in the process of turning our dramatic play area into a haunted house! Here are some great shots of our day! We also used the Smartboard and paper and pencil to practice making the letter "A". Great job! We also spent some time working on puzzles! They are great for developing our problem solving skills and working cooperatively! Have a wonderful evening!
Wednesday, October 8th: This morning to celebrate fall we cleaned out a pumpkin. The children are excited for our upcoming visit to Saunders and of course, Halloween! Later this month, we will carve our pumpkin into a Jack-O-Lantern!! This afternoon we read the book, "How Many Seeds in a Pumpkin?" Mrs. Byrne collected all of the seeds from our pumpkin and she is going to roast the seeds tonight and then we are going to have them for snack tomorrow. Here we are harvesting the pumpkin seeds ... Our interest in patterns and patterning continues! The children have been creating and identifying AB patterns, AAB patterns and many more! Here are some great pics of us and our patterns!! We are also excited about our fall writing. We are using vocabulary words in English and in French and then illustrating them! We are doing some fabulous work! The marble run was a popular choice today! We created many interesting (and complicated) structures!! Have a wonderful evening! :)
Monday, October 6th: Happy Monday! We had a very busy day today! We have been talking about autumn and all the ways we experience it ~ playing in the leaves, picking and eating apples and of course Thanksgiving and Halloween! We started our day with a birthday! It was actually Saturday but because we were not at school we celebrated today! Here is the birthday girl making and modelling her birthday crown!! On Thursday, we read the story "Ten Apples Up On Top" and a couple of our friends decided to experiment with their snacks ... check out these fabulous pics! We love the creativity!! We have been exploring numbers and patterns in math!! We have been doing an AB (blue, red) pattern on our daily ten frames and for October we started an AAB pattern on our calendar using leaves and pumpkins! Our friends are so excited to explore numbers and patterns!! Finally, we visited the library today! Mrs. Szeideman read us the story "Hippo Goes Bananas!" We loved it!! Have a great evening!
