Monday, April 25th: * Important Note * To celebrate Education Week we are attending Mass at St. Patrick's church. The permission form is in your child's communication book. Please complete the form and return it to school as soon as possible. Here are some great photos of our Scientist in Schools - Backyard Bugs. Thank you to all of the parents who volunteered. Have a wonderful evening! :)
Thursday, April 14th: * Reminder * Tomorrow is a PD day! Just a quick note as well to all of our parents that volunteered to help with our "Scientists in School" workshop on Friday, April 22nd ~ we would ask that you arrive at school at 9:00 am so that the instructor can brief you about the activities. Thank you! * Contest *
As part of our environmental initiatives, St. Anne's is partnering with Crayola to recycle markers. If you have any markers that have dried out please send them to school with your child and we will recycle them. The class that collects the most markers will win a "mystery prize". The markers do not have to be the Crayola brand - it can be any marker! Thank you - the children are very excited! Wednesday, April 13th: We had a very busy day today! We continued our bug and insect inquiry and read the book "The Lonely Firefly". We learned that fireflies are also called lightning bugs. We had a birthday girl today! As you can see on her crown she was 6! Happy Birthday!! After our discussion about fireflies we had DPA with Mrs. Carter-Rae. After snack, Mrs. Mahusky's grade ones came to read us some reports they had done on animals. The grade ones researched an animal and wrote about it - we were excited because some of us have brothers and sisters in Mrs. Mahusky's class! Here are some great photos!! This afternoon we had a lot of fun bug activities. Some of my friends were doing some research with Mrs. Meredith about fireflies and other friends were exploring the bug sensory bin! Our friends were having fun at the art table looking at all of the different bugs. Mrs. Meredith and I thought they were going to draw pictures of the bugs - not only did they draw pictures but they were sounding out the names of each bug and writing them! Awesome!! Other friends were having fun exploring math! They brought out the dice, links and frogs! They were having a great time practicing writing their numbers and some even made dice! We ended our day with our favorite activity! We got together with our grade six reading buddies! It was so nice outside today we decided to take advantage of the weather and enjoy some outdoor play with our older buddies! Have a wonderful evening! :)
Monday, April 11th: As you know, the children have become quite interested in bugs and insects; so today we read the book, "From Caterpillar to Butterfly". We learned about the life cycle of a butterfly! We also learned some new scientific vocabulary - ask us about a metamorphosis and a chrysalis! After the story some of my friends were doing some science and looking at the life cycle of a butterfly while others were doing some fun butterfly math. They had to roll 2 dice and then add the numbers and then colour the correct butterfly! One of my friends celebrated his birthday today and enjoyed making his crown! Unfortunately the pictures did not upload :( I will post them on Wednesday! Other friends were having fun playing a letter match memory game on the Smartboard. They had to match the upper and lowercase letters! Other friends were using the Smartboard to practice their number recognition and counting - they were doing dot to dots! My friends love using the melting beads. Many of them were working on their fine motor using the different shapes to manipulate the beads! Other friends were working on their fine motor skills using the hopping frogs game. They have to make the frog "jump" into the bucket! Very fun! Our friends are still enjoying the "Vet's Office". Today they were very busy and one of the doctors was reading some x-rays! Just for fun ~ two of my friends wore the same shirt today! Great minds think alike!! Twins! Have a wonderful evening! :)
Friday, April 8th: Happy Friday! It has been a very busy week. I was away Wednesday and Thursday so there was a lot to catch up on today! We have started a new inquiry about bugs and today we read the book "Les coccinelles" - ladybugs in English. We spent some time talking about insects - did you know insects have 6 legs? After our discussion, many of my friends decided to do some writing. They were writing ladybug in English and French! Great work and illustrations! Writing was not only happening at our writing centre but on our whiteboard for math as well. Over the last couple of days many of my friends have been practicing their addition and writing the number sentences! Great job! Other friends were having fun with math using the links! They were representing numbers with the links. Other friends have been working on their fine motor skills. Some were using the lacing letters and others were playing Jenga! I was so happy to see so many of my friends taking time to enjoy a book. Some were reading alone and others were reading with a friend! Have a wonderful weekend! :)
Monday, April 4th: Happy Monday! We started our day with the story "Inch by Inch" by Leo Lionni. As you can guess, we have started measurement in math. My friends enjoyed the story about the little inch worm that measured! Needless to say, after the story they were measuring everything in sight at our math centre and then they measured each other!! Fun!! My friends got busy measuring a kleenex box, a pencil, a pen, and a book! Then they got creative and measured each other! They recorded their results and compared - who was the tallest, who was the shortest, how may links tall are you? Other friends were working on exploring and constructing 3D shapes. They were using the geometric shape set! Great exploration! Our writing centre was very popular today! Many of my friends were writing about their favorite pet or just having fun writing the animal words in English and French and they drawing a picture! Awesome! Our "Vet Office" continues to be the place to be. The children love examining the animals, booking appointments and having fun! Here are some great photos! Today was our library day so we went and listened to a great story! The librarian (Mrs. Szeideman was away today) read us the book Butterfly Park! We loved it. We are going to be learning about the life cycle of a butterfly and other bugs in science!! It was a great way to kick off the spring! After the story we got to choose our own book! Have a wonderful evening! :)
