My apologies everyone. The Mass at St. Patrick's is on Tuesday, May 5th not Thursday, May 7th as I originally posted! Sorry for the confusion!

Wednesday, April 29th: * Important Note * As part of our Education Week celebration the entire school will be attending Mass at St. Patrick's on Thursday, May 7th at 11:00 am. Your child has brought home the permission form in their mailbag, please sign and return to school as soon as possible. Many thanks. We spent some time today working on building resilience. We started our exploration with "Beautiful Oops" and today we discussed red thoughts and green thoughts. The children brainstormed their ideas and this is what they discovered: To generate discussion around red and green thoughts we read the book "Alexander and the Terrible, Horrible, No Good, Very Bad Day". The children discussed how Alexander's attitude (his red thoughts) contributed to his "terrible, horrible, no good, very bad day". They discussed the idea that if Alexander used some green thoughts his day might have improved. Very smart friends!! They all agreed that our own attitudes about things have a big effect. If we believe we can do something and keep trying we will accomplish it! To prepare for Baby Arya's visit next week we have been discussing communication and all of the different ways we communicate with each other. Today, Mrs. Byrne taught us some sign language and we will be singing and signing to Baby Arya when she comes to visit. The best part, Arya's mom has been teaching her sign language so she might sign back! Here are some great photos of us learning to sign. We loved learning to sign! As discussed we used the book "Beautiful Oops" to inspire us to create some wonderful art pieces. Here is a sneak peek at "Our Beautiful Oops" board that will be on display next week for Education Week. We brought our plants back into the classroom today to water them and give them some care. They have grown so much that we had to "stake" them today. Here are two friends moving them back to the hall for some sunlight. Have a wonderful evening! :)
Monday, April 27th: * IMPORTANT NOTES * As you may be aware, one of the families in our school community suffered a tragic fire. Thankfully, none of the family members were hurt; however, they lost all of their possessions in the fire. The St. Anne Community is hosting a dance on Friday, May 1st to help the family during this time of need. Please see the note in your child's mailbag for further information. As always, we thank you for your support. We are having a "Book Fair" at St. Anne during Education Week, May 4 th - 8th. The "Book Fair" will be open for you to browse with your child during the St. Anne Open House on Monday, May 4th. We had a great day today! We started our day by reading the book "Beautiful Oops". We are trying to foster a positive approach to learning by embracing our mistakes and looking at them as an opportunity to learn or in this case, create something beautiful. Not only does it foster a better attitude, it helps to build resiliency! The children had a wonderful discussion around mistakes. It doesn't matter the context of the mistake - we can embrace the opportunity to further our learning. Most agreed that mistakes can be a good thing and not a negative thing! To make learning fun we gave the children a challenge. Each of them was given a piece of drawing paper with an "oops". Rather than recycling the damaged pieces of paper we challenged the children to create a work of art embracing the oops! We got some wonderful creations that will be on display in our class during the Open House. In the meantime, here is a preview of our artists at work! Have a wonderful evening! :)
Friday, April 24th: We have had a very busy Earth Week. The children worked very hard learning about recycling and why we do it. They sorted many different materials into the proper "bins" and touted the importance of composting during the "Eco Parade" on Thursday. Here are some great pictures of their explorations! As you may have noticed one of our friends celebrated his birthday yesterday! You can see his finished crown in the photo above but here is a picture of him creating the crown! Happy Birthday! It was fun to be in a parade on your birthday!! We spent some time looking at our newly planted seeds. We can't believe that they have already begun to sprout. They inspired us to do some beautiful painting for our board! Our friends designed some great t-shirts to wear in the parade! They were very colorful and proudly supported Earth Day! Once they had created their t-shirt they modeled it in the parade! Check out the great photos! Finally, our hockey play-off pool is going strong! Mrs. Dilabio is doing really well with her pics - I think it is because of her advisers! Our friends have even gotten into spelling out their favorite players names with the magnetic letters. Have a wonderful weekend! :)
Monday, April 20th: Since the morning was so rainy we decided to start our day with the book "Diary of a Worm". The story generated much discussion around the importance of earthworms. The children were able to make connections to our "Spring to Life" inquiry by stating that worms are important for the soil. By working the soil (tunnelling around) worms make it healthier and easier for plants to grow. They were also able to connect the importance of earthworms to our discussion about Earth Day. Earthworms help keep the soil and plants healthy. When the soil and plants are healthy the earth is healthy. I have also posted a couple of songs about Earth Day that the children have really enjoyed. We started our afternoon in the library. Mrs. Szeideman was away today so Mrs. B read us the story. It was "The Day My Mom Came to Kindergarten". We thought it was great! Here are some shots of us enjoying the story. When we got back to the classroom one of our friends did some amazing writing about earthworms and the earth. She wrote: "If I was worm I would help our planet take off trash. Our planet helps us, we help back!" Amazing writing!
Friday, April 17th: * Reminder * If you have not already done so, please return the permission form for your child to attend the Experimental Farm field trip on Friday, May 1st. We had a very busy day today. We have been changing our bulletin board to reflect our new "Spring to Life" inquiry. The children have made some amazing sun flowers to post on our board. Here are a few photos of their creations and the board! The children have been studying the letter "X" this week and have made some amazing xylophones! Here are some photos of their artwork and their amazing "X" word list! An oldie but a goodie - some of my friends were having a great time playing with Mr. and Mrs. Potato Head. I especially like the last creation! Our Farmer's Market and our "sandbox" continue to be our most popular centres. Here are some great photos of our friends enjoying both! I love their imagination and conversations during play! Unfortunately, one of our friends missed her birthday at school due to the stomach flu! Thankfully, she is back and was able to make her crown! Have a wonderful weekend! :)
Wednesday, April 15th: Playoff fever has hit St. Anne! So many of our friends were sporting their favorite jersey, t-shirt, hat or team colours! Their spirit is awesome! The children are invited to wear their favorite jersey on game days! Here is a great photo of our awesome class spirit We started our day outside today. The children enjoyed the great spring weather and getting back into summer sports. We had a lively game of basketball, a rock hunt and people making "sand angels". Here are some great photos of our outdoor adventures!! The children can't get enough of sand! We brought the sand into our sensory bin and added some construction vehicles, a dump truck, loader and bulldozer - it has become the most popular spot in the classroom! I wonder what they are building ... Sand is not the only "dirt" action happening in our classroom. We continued our "Spring Inquiry" today and planted some seeds. We read the story "Mrs. Spritzer's Garden" and planted our own flowers. We will be moving them into the hallway to get light from the skylight. With any luck, we will have our own beautiful sun flowers in a few weeks!! Have a great evening! :) Enjoy the game - Go Sens Go!
Monday, April 13th: * Reminder * If you have not already done so, please complete and return the permission form for our field trip to the Experimental Farm on May 1st. Happy Monday! It finally feels like a "Spring" day. To celebrate, we are beginning a new inquiry "Spring to Life". We will be looking at various concepts over the next few weeks - life cycles of plants and animals, planting seeds and spring activities to name a few. This morning we read the book "Plant A Kiss". Good feelings and deeds grew out of a little girl's idea to "plant a kiss". A little later in our inquiry we will be planting seeds. We also celebrated a birthday! We sang "Happy Birthday" and "Bonne Fête"! Our birthday boy got to make his crown after lunch - he was too busy building shapes this morning!! After gym, we completed our inquiry into 2D and 3D shapes. The children were given mini-marshmallows and toothpicks to construct their shapes. The best part, once they were completed they were able to eat them. Here are some great photos of their creations. We put the finishing touches on our "Playoff Pool"! The children love watching the hockey games and supporting their favorite teams. Once again this year, our boys decided they wanted to follow the action. It is a great way to keep their math skills going!! Mrs. Dilabio even got involved and put in her picks!
We designed our chart and the boys created all the logos for the teams involved. We are ready for Wednesday! Have a wonderful evening! :) Friday, April 10th: We had a very busy day today! We started our day with a visit from baby Arya! We can't believe how much she has grown. She is almost walking and walked with her mom into the circle! Wow! After our visit with Arya, we continued our exploration of 2D and 3D shapes. Some of our friends experimented with stacking cylinders. Some were easy to stack and others we had to play with the arrangement! After our "experiment" of stacking the cylinders, one friend wondered which 3D shapes would roll and which would slide. She set up her own experiment! These friends were having fun experimenting with stacking shapes and another friend was having fun building with shapes!
