Wednesday, November 30th: It is hard to believe it is almost December. As you know, we are having our Advent liturgy on Monday, December 5th at 10:10 in the gym. You are all welcome to join us but it will be a very short service - about 10 minutes. Mrs. Meredith and I stayed late last night and rearranged our classroom! The children were very excited to see the changes - we have incorporated a building area with a science area - we wanted to make the room more spacious! My friends had a very busy morning. They had a great time using our new areas. Some of my friends were using the "Kinects" to make snowflakes. Then they discovered that they could make them spin and were having races to see who's spun the fastest! Awesome! My friends are still loving our "Garage/Car Repair Shop". The love giving the cars a tune up and getting them ready for Winter! As I said, the children are loving the changes to the room. Here are some great shots of them enjoying the new reading area, the new carpet area for math and the new counter space for Lego (playing with the Advent Lego set)! We will also be using the counter as our "tech" area when our iPads come back - they love sitting on the stools and working there! Our art and writing tables were very popular today. It is nice to see my friends writing - they seem to enjoy writing the alphabet! The best part of rearranging the room was that we relocated our sand table. We emptied the sand and replaced it with snowflakes. My friends were having a wonderful time playing with arctic animals! Have a wonderful evening! :)

Monday, November 28th: Apps for iPads: Many of you have requested a list of apps that we use on the iPads here at school. Unfortunately, the iPads have been returned to the Board to be reloaded so I am not able to get the names of the apps. We are anticipating that they will be returned in the next week or so with more new math apps on them. Once I get the iPads back I will post a list of the apps that we use for math and language. In the meantime, we have used a couple of coding apps that the children love - Kodable and Scratch Jr. Hope this helps! We had a very busy day today! We started our morning in the gym and then went to the library. Miss Alexa read us the book "Bear Hug". After library, we celebrated the first week of Advent. We learned that the first candle is "promise" - God promised to take care of us by sending us His only son, Jesus. We lit the first Advent candle and sang the song "Light the Advent Candle". My friends are obsessed with cars. On Friday, we changed our dramatic play area into a "Garage/Auto Repair Shop". Here are some great pictures of the space and my "mechanics" at work! The car obsession did not stop with dramatic play! Some of my friends built cars using Lego and then raced them in the hall. We tried attaching balloons to see if it would make the cars go faster but it didn't work - back to the drawing board! Not all of my friends were car obsessed. Some of them were working their fine motor skills with a lacing activity, some were into drawing and others were doing math puzzles! Fun! Have a wonderful evening! :)
Friday, November 25th:
Mrs. H. was away today - regular post on Monday! Have a great weekend! Enjoy the Grey Cup!! Wednesday, November 23rd: * Reminder * Now that we have entered into the season of hats, mittens, snow pants, scarves etc. please remember to label your child's belongings they often don't recognize their own things. Thank you! I will post the pictures from Monday at the end of this post. We had a busy day today my friends have been working hard on their pieces for our "Kindness Quilt". They are each creating a watercolour heart and then writing a message inside it. The quilt is honor of anti-bullying week and will displayed on the wall outside our classroom! Here are some of our artists at work! While my artists were working on their pieces other friends were having fun exploring math concepts. They were doing "one more and one less". When we started the activity we were using the magnetic ten frames and then they rolled the giant dice and were displaying one more or one less than the number they rolled! Awesome number sense!! Our iPads are away getting reloaded with some new apps so my friends have been practicing their math facts and letters on the Smartboard. We have to take turns so we started a list on the chalkboard and if my friends wanted a turn they had to sign the list! The magnetic blocks were popular today. They were not building structures today but exploring shapes! One of my friends made a triangle, one made a square. He realized when he turned the square on its side it looked like a diamond! We are mathematicians and learned that another name for a diamond is a rhombus! The marble run was very popular today! My friends worked cooperatively to build their run! I think they were even having some races! Writing is always popular with the SKs. There is something about the whiteboards and dry erase markers that make them want to write and draw! Mrs. Meredith is busy making our " I wonder .." board. We are going to display the children doing various activities and post their wonderings! We can't wait to get started! Stay tuned for more pictures! As promised here are the pictures from Monday's activities! I can't believe my Lego friends were able to build the pieces with no instructions they just looked at the pictures on the box! Amazing problem solving skills! Problem solving, cooperation, building, fun ... who know Lego was so exciting! Here is their amazing work! My building team! There would be no village without them ~ we are going to finish on Friday! Have a wonderful evening! :)
Monday, November 21st: * Kinder Christmas Concert * We are happy to announce that we will be having a Kindergarten Christmas Concert on Wednesday, December 21st from 2:00 until 2:30 pm. We will be sending home a note later this month or early next month with more details. Our class will be dressing like elves (wearing red and green) so if you are shopping at the Dollar Store and happen to see the hats with elf ears grab one for your child to wear! We are very excited - it is going to be fun! We had a great day today! My friends were very excited to see the snow! Unfortunately, not all of the pictures from the iPad uploaded so this will be a short post ;( I will add the pictures to the post on Wednesday! On Friday I picked up the Lego Advent calendar! I had several friends helping me put the pieces together. Oops - we did it wrong - they were supposed to assemble one piece each day! We decided to assemble it all and they could play with it in December! We have some preliminary photos - we didn't get all of the pieces assembled today - we will finish on Wednesday! I apologize as only a couple of photos uploaded and I am not sure if all of my friends are in them! I will post the others on Wednesday! None of the photos from our wonderful activities uploaded. My friends were playing mystery writing (they had to draw a letter rock out of the bag and then write it), some were using the tweezers to place pompoms on letters, others were doing art and writing about kindness inside them (for anti-bullying week) and some were playing Jenga and on the light table! I will post all of these photos on Wednesday as they did not upload! :( Have a wonderful evening! Enjoy the snow :)
Wednesday, November 16th: We had a great day today! We are becoming very musical! In our preparation for our Advent celebration (details to follow soon) and our Christmas concert (again details to follow soon) we have been busy singing! We practiced both of our songs today and started saying our Advent prayer. The dates for our special events are marked on the blog under the calendar - just click on the calendar page and forward the calendar to December. The times are not posted as yet as we are still working out the gym times - I will give you as much notice as I can (the Christmas concert will probably be in the afternoon and the Advent celebration will probably be in the morning). Speaking of Advent - remember the challenge I gave to my friends about the Lego Christmas tree? One of my friends totally surprised me and made the most beautiful tree yesterday! Of course, I got distracted and forgot to take a picture of it - I promise I will take a picture and it will be in Monday's post as Friday is a PD day! To my little friend (E.M.) Mrs. H. is really sorry! :( This afternoon my friends were doing some amazing activities. Some were building structures using marshmallows and toothpicks, others were reinforcing their counting and math skills by playing a game of "Snakes and Ladders", some were working on their fine motor skills with our "Jumping Frogs" game, and others were having a great time building with gears. Some of the girls were exploring magnets with the magnetic dolls, and other friends were enjoying playing on the light table. Here are some great photos! Finally, one of my friends was having fun making patterns with the lacing pegs! Check out her work! Awesome! Have a wonderful evening! :)
Monday, November 14th: We had a very hectic morning! We started our day in the gym and then went to the library! We love going to the library to listen to stories and take out books! Today Miss Alexa read us the book "If Kids Ruled the World". We loved it! This afternoon we were looking ahead to Advent. Many of my friends have Advent calendars at home to help count off the days until Christmas! They all told me how much they love the chocolate each day! Over the weekend I had seen a Lego Advent calendar. Needless to say, the real thing is too expensive - so, I challenged my friends to build our own Advent calendar. We decided that we will make a Lego Christmas tree - label it and use it to keep track of the days until Christmas. My friends are very excited to get started! If you have a little Lego Santa that we could borrow (he is going to move up our tree to mark off the days until Christmas) we would love it! I am going to look and see if I can get one! We researched as a group and this is the tree design we came up with! My friends then got busy with the first step of the construction - they divided up our Lego into bags (green, brown, red and yellow). They can't wait to get started! We may end up with our own Lego Santa's Village! Stay tuned ... Other friends were busy at the art table! We talked a little bit about symmetry (something being the same on both sides) so we did an experiment with paint. My friends dabbed some paint onto our art paper, then folded it in half and voila! A painting with perfect symmetry! Here are a few samples of their experimenting! The writing centre was very popular this afternoon. We are writing each other a "kindness" letter and we are going to open them on Friday! What a great way to fill our buckets!! Other friends were using their problem solving skills at the math table! My friends were using the unifix cubes to build numbers! They even put the numbers together to build double digits! We always need to practice our "teen" numbers! Awesome! After lunch many of my friends were developing their problem solving skills! They were having a great time doing a variety of puzzles before quiet time! I think they liked the "Arthur" puzzle the best! Have a wonderful evening! :)
Friday, November 11th: Mrs. Meredith and I would like to thank all of you for coming to parent/teacher interviews. It was so great to see you all and to fill you in all of the wonderful learning your children have been doing! We have had a very busy day today! We started our day outside today! It was fun to have the climber and field to ourselves. Some of my friends were having a great time kicking the soccer ball around and others were enjoying the climber! Here are some great photos! When we came inside we did some more Remembrance Day activities. We wrote thank-you letters to soldiers, created poppies using gems and our unifix cubes, drew poppies at the art table, played on the iPads and Boogie Boards, built some amazing structures using Lego and tried to build poppies with our suction cup building toys but as the boys reminded me - there is no black so we have to use blue! This afternoon we attended our Remembrance Day ceremony! Thank you to all of the parents and honored guests who were able to attend - you made it such a special event for us! We were very excited to sing our song "Beau Coquelicot"and some of my friends were very proud to wear their Sparks and Beaver uniforms! Unfortunately, so much was going on Mrs. Meredith and I did not have a chance to get a picture of the three of them together! We do have an awesome picture of our wreath holders! Have a wonderful weekend! :)
