We had a very busy and exciting day today! We would like to thank all of the moms and dads who came in to read to us today! You made Family Literacy Day extra special! We even had a friend with a birthday today! This post is a little long because we have lots of wonderful photos to share!
We started our morning a little differently today! We had a "number talk". We are working on number sense with the children and the ability to compose and decompose numbers. This exercise builds a great foundation for mental math and computation skills in later grades.
I placed 6 black dots on the Smartboard and asked the children how many dots do you see? How do you see them? Their answers were wonderful and they shared their strategies. One friend said 6 and she counted them by ones - that was how she knew there were 6; another friend said she saw two groups of three and then a friend said she saw three groups of two. I then asked them how many more do we need to make 10. We learned a new strategy for counting - counting on. Since we knew we had 6 dots we didn't need to start again at 1 to find out how many we needed to get to 10 - we counted on from 6! I have a bunch of budding math mathematicians! Awesome work, thinking and sharing!
