Friday,May 29th: The children have been very busy over the last couple of days. They have been working on the "ai" sound as well as the word "of". They had fun brainstorming different words with "ai" and highlighting the word "of" in sentences. Other friends were cutting out letters and making their own words. We have spent time this week working on writing our numbers. We are revisiting the numbers from one to ten. We are writing numbers, number words and putting the number on a ten frame. Great practice to get us ready to write number sentences! We have been exploring the life cycle of a butterfly and this week that branched out into other insects and bugs. We read the book "Bugs, Beetles and Butterflies". One of the pages in the book inspired us to discuss camouflage. Many animals and insects use camouflage to hide from predators. We then got creative and made our own camouflage pictures. We created some great art pieces about camouflage. Today we began our day outdoors. We were working on some gross motor skills and enjoying the fresh air. Some of our friends were intrigued at the work on the construction site next door. They were watching the construction crew making the basement of the house. Finally, we enjoyed a picnic at snack! It was fun to eat outside! Have a great weekend!:)

Monday, May 25th: * Reminder * If you are interested in attending the St Anne Fun Fair on Friday, June 5th please return the forms as soon as possible. We had a great day today even though we had to spend it indoors due to the rain! We continued our "Spring to Life" inquiry today and looked at the lifecycle of a butterfly. We read an "ebook" called "From Caterpillar to Butterfly". We are getting very good at speaking French. Whenever we use our Frech we get to add a stone to our bucket. Once the bucket is full we will have a special day - maybe playing outside with popsicles or a movie with popcorn! We can't wait. Ask us how to say butterfly and caterpillar in French! This afternoon we were working on our math and science skills. We were doing "butterfly subtraction"and putting the "life cycle" of a butterfly pictures in order. Here are some great shots of our work! We are great mathematicians and loved subtraction! We were surrounded by scientists today. Some were investigating the life cycle of a butterfly while others were investigating the bird's nest and feather! Here are some great photos of their work! These scientists were exploring the seeds, bird's nest and feather. Some of their comparisons were very creative! Good job! The children had fun making their own caterpillars. They gave them antennae, legs and googly eyes. We put some of them up on our board. Very colourful! Finally, one of our friends got very creative with the pieces of the caterpillar and created her own art. Very cute ~ I love the pink bunny! Have a wonderful evening. :)
Sunday, May 24th: I don't usually post on Sundays but I found an interesting article on reading that I thought might be of interest. I hope you find it helpful. Enjoy the great weather! :)

Mrs. Helgason was away today at a workshop! More posts next week! Have a wonderful weekend! :) Wednesday, May 20th: This morning we continued our exploration of "mindset" by reading the book "Be Positive". Many of our friends needed a reminder about getting along and using inside voices. We are hoping that this book helped to remind them. We had fun at recess today even though it was a little chilly. Some of our friends found a mama bird and her babies. We think they were disturbed by the construction next door. Speaking of construction, the construction workers were listening to music and we could hear it ~ so, some of our girls decided to make up a dance! Very fun! While the girls were dancing the boys were playing a spirited game of basketball. I'm sure all that running and jumping kept them warm! Here are some great shots! Other friends were enjoying the climber. It never gets old. They love the slides and climbing. Over the last few days the children have been enjoying building different structures with Lego. Here are some of their creations. Our tea room continues to be a popular spot. The waiters and staff are so efficient! The cupcakes are yummy too! Our friends were in a playful mood yesterday! They were hanging out in the reading area with the puppets! Here are some cute photos of them clowning around! Many of our friends were working on their language skills. They were using the language tubs - sorting objects by their beginning sounds! Great practice for reading! Have a great evening :)
Friday, May 15th: We spent some time outside this morning enjoying the weather. Some of the boys were having a great game of soccer! Other friends were having a good time on the climber and slides. There were three classes outside so it was nice to play with some friends from other classes! Our friends have been working on their reading. This week they have been working on the recognizing the word "and". In these photos, they are reading the sentences and highlighting the word "and". Great reading! Some of our friends were playing "Go Fish". They are working on math skills (number recognition, sorting) while they do it! They are also working on memory skills by remembering the different cards of their opponents! Who knew playing "Go Fish" was so educational! Our friends are still fascinated with the "flubber". They love stretching it and molding it. One friend made a cupcake!! We had some friends interested in building today. Some were building with the magnetic blocks and some were building with the wooden blocks. We have spent the last couple of days transforming our dramatic play area. It went from a "Farmer's Market" to a "Tea Room". We name our tea room a "Spot-O-Tea". The children made a wonderful sign but it wasn't finished so I will post more pictures next week. In the meantime, here are some fun pictures of friends enjoying a "spot-o-tea" and a cupcake! We even have a waiter! Fabulous! Enjoy the long weekend! :)
Wednesday, May 13th: We have had a very busy couple of days. Yesterday, we had a presentation from an Ottawa Firefighter about fire safety. We had a lot of fun completing the books he gave us. Our favorite was the maze where we had to find our way out of the fire! This morning we started a little "mini-inquiry" on bees. We read the book "Busy Buzzers - Bees in Your Backyard" on the Smartboard. It was full of great facts about bees. We discovered how important bees are to plants. They help with pollination ask us how! Our interest in bees started with Mrs. Dilabio (our vice-principal). She found a bird's nest and a dead bee on a walk with her dog. She brought them in for us to look at in our science area. We loved looking at them using the magnifying glasses. To go with the bird's nest and the bee we made a sensory bin full of bugs! Don't worry - we used plastic ones! Here are some great photos of our scientists in action. I love to hear them talk about their wonderings and questions! In keeping with science and sensory play, we made some more flubber! The children love the feel of it! They love making it "drip"! You can't do this with play dough! Our friends are still having a lot of fun with measurement. As I said, we have started measuring and comparing objects according to weight! Now they weigh everything! We have been working on more letter blends. This friend is working on the "th" sound! She is creating her book! Have a wonderful evening! :)
Monday, May 11th: We had a quieter day today as our schedule returned to normal. This morning we read the book "The Dot". The children then experimented with dots to create some unique art. Here are some images of our artists creating pieces using dots! Some used big dots, some used little dots - most framed their "dots". We have been exploring measurement in math. The children have used various manipulatives (links, snowflakes, blocks) to measure the length of different objects. Today they explored measurement using scales. They compared and objects based on weight. We went to the library this afternoon. Mrs. Szeideman read us the book "I Don't Want to be a Frog"! We loved it! When we got back from the library, Mrs. Byrne decided to make some "flubber". We love it because it is gooey! Here are some photos of us making and then playing with the flubber. Our friends love playing with the "flubber" especially when it drips! Have a wonderful evening! :)
