Just a quick reminder that if you are sending a Halloween treat in your child's lunch please remember it has to be nut free. We have a friend with a severe nut allergy! Thank you!

Monday, October 31st: Happy Halloween! We had a spook-tacular day today! My friends were so excited! We had a Halloween parade this morning - my friends went on a tour through the school showing off their costumes! Here are some cute pictures of them lining up and touring a grade 1 class! * Gentle Reminder * We know that our friends are super excited to have their Halloween treats; however, we respectfully ask that you limit Halloween treats to one in school lunches. Thank you for your help with this matter. Getting ready for the "Halloween parade": After the parade my friends posed in front of our "Haunted House". We grouped the children according to costumes and they had fun giving us their best poses! This afternoon my friends were counting our pumpkin seeds! They placed them on a hundreds chart and then they coloured a secret message! We had over 300 seeds (we didn't get an exact count as we bumped the table by accident!) Oops! Have a safe and happy Halloween! Have fun trick or treating!! :)
Friday, October 28th: * Next week is St. Anne Spirit Week * We had a very busy day today! My friends are very excited about Halloween and we continued our Halloween activities. As you know, they love the song "5 Little Pumpkins" so, today we gave them a building challenge - can you build a gate for the 5 little pumpkins? Our finished gates were amazing! Some of us had more than 5 pumpkins on our gates! Building gates was not the only pumpkin activity. Some of my friends were making pumpkin art. They painted coffee filters orange (this morning) sprayed them water, let them dry and then this afternoon made them into Jack-o-Lanterns! Awesome! This morning we had pumpkin construction, pumpkin art and then some of my friends helped me carve our pumpkin. They decided they wanted a scary face so we Googled a pattern and they poked out the pattern so I could carve the pumpkin! Our Jack-O-Lantern was a source of interest for the rest of the day. Some of my friends decided to examine it with the magnifying glasses! My friends were enjoying working at the counter today! Some were writing Halloween words and some were using the iPads! We love sitting on the stools to work at the counter! My friends were having a great time playing "Snap" today! What a great way to practice number recognition, counting, and greater than less than! It is always awesome to see my friends writing! I am not sure if it is the whiteboards and markers or the Halloween words! Great job! Have a wonderful weekend! :)
Wednesday, October 26th: * Important * For those of you that ordered tickets to the Halloween Family Fun Night please check your child's mailbag as they went home today! Also, the children received their prizes for selling the Entertainment books. The children are encouraged to wear their Halloween costumes on Monday! We do ask; however, that you do not send any little pieces that may go with the costume (wands, crowns, props etc) as we do not want them to get misplaced before trick-or-treating! Thanks for your help with this matter! We had a very busy day today! We continued our "pumpkin inquiry". My friends put on their "scientists hats" and did some hypothesizing! They were guessing whether they thought our pumpkins would sink or float. Before we conducted our experiment, we graphed our hypothesis! We were comparing our sparkle pumpkin and our regular sized pumpkin. My friends were also mathematicians! They compared the results for both pumpkins! We discovered that they both showed the same information but it was recorded in a different way! For the big pumpkin, we plotted our names and for the sparkle pumpkin we used tally marks! While we were conducting our experiment we made a discovery. At first, we thought our large pumpkin sank in the water. We discovered we did not have enough water in our container. When we added more water, we realized that our big pumpkin did float! Here we are conducting our experiment! After we finished our "sink or float" experiment, we read the book "How many seeds in a pumpkin?" We discovered some new pumpkin facts - did you know that each line on the outside of the pumpkin represents a row of seeds inside it? We are amazing scientists! This afternoon we cleaned out our pumpkin! It was very interesting inside, it had lots of seeds but it also had strings that looked like spaghetti! It was not all gooey! Here we are cleaning it out! We started off using a big spoon but some of my friends switched to their hands! While some friends were cleaning out the pumpkin other friends were making patterns and pictures with Halloween stickers and stamps, some were doing Halloween writing on the "Boogie boards", others were building structures with Lego and some were playing on the light table! Have a wonderful evening! :)
Monday, October 24th: My friends are very excited about Halloween! Our "haunted house" was a very popular activity today! We are going to clean out our pumpkin and carve it into a jack-o-lantern on Wednesday! In the meantime, here a some cute photos of my friends getting in the Halloween spirit! Halloween activities were not limited to our haunted house! Some of my friends were doing some Halloween math! They had to figure out the missing number! We used number lines to help us figure it out! Other friends were having fun writing Halloween words! Today, we were writing the words in French: une sorcière, un chat noir!! Très bien les amis!! Some friends were doing "math" even though they didn't realize it! We gave them some rocks with lines on them and let them experiment! Some used them to create patterns and others used them to make longer lines! Fun! At the art table my friends were experimenting with shades of blue! They became obsessed with the colour blue after a Storybots story! Have a wonderful evening! :)
Wednesday, October 19th: * Reminder * Tomorrow, Thursday, October 20th is picture day. Please do not dress your child in green as the background is green and green clothing will not show up. We had a very busy day today! We started a pumpkin inquiry. My friends were being mathematicians and estimating how many cubes tall they thought our pumpkin would be. We learned that an estimate is like a guess. We estimated this morning and actually measured it this afternoon. Tomorrow we are going to estimate how big around it is! My mathematicians caught the "measuring bug" today. After measuring the pumpkins they decided to measure each other! Awesome! Pumpkins were not the only math happening today! We gave our friends some building challenges that actually combine science, technology, engineering and math (STEM activities). They used Lego to complete the challenges! Some of them worked in pairs and others worked individually. Here are the photos of their creations based on their challenge cards! Very creative! Other friends were exploring their artistic side! I put out the watercolor paints and they were very quick to create their own magnificent pieces! Speaking of artistic ~ my friends decided they wanted to change our dramatic play area into a "Haunted House"! Mrs. Meredith has been working hard to help them! Here are some preliminary shots of our work in progress!! Have a wonderful evening! :)
Tuesday, October 18th:
* Important * Just a quick note to let you know Thursday, October 20th is picture day! Don't forget to bring your smile! :) Monday, October 17th Part 2:
I forgot to mention that "Mother Nature" contributed to our Halloween discussion and excitement! The children discovered a spider living behind the couch in our reading area! All the talk about spiders has really sparked their excitement about Halloween! Here is a photo of our class spider! |
